Computer Options for the Exceptional was established in 1985, when assistive technology was still in its infancy, by Barbara Couse Adams. Barb is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. She has over 13 years of experience using technology with people with disabilities. Through Computer Options for the Exceptional, Barb operates a small private practice, provides assistive technology assessments and conducts workshops and inservices. Between all that, Barb enjoys dabbling in software development. She designed the award-winning software program My House: Language Activities of Daily Living, which is published by Laureate Learning Systems. The Independent Living Activities were created by Barb at a time when she was providing services to developmentally disabled teens and adults in an "institution-to-community" transition program. They were developed out a real need for simple, functional and effective, yet inexpensive software for older people.

Barb also helped develop Needs First: AugCom System Search Tool. This is an interactive database of ALL currently available AAC systems. It was designed to help users find the augcom system with the features that match their clients' needs.

Finally, Computer Options for the Exceptional recently created and hosts the website www.augcomm.com. This website is the premiere internet resource on augmentative communication with industry news, links to manufacturers, links to other AAC sites, conferences and publication information and guest writers.
