Dial the Phone
This activity provides students the opportunity to practice dialing the phone without tying up phone lines or ringing up long distance bills. The computer screen becomes a phone pad and a phone number is given along the bottom. The student receives various amounts of cueing to correctly dial the number. Once the number is dialed, the call is completed and the student sees Freddy or Freida making a call with realistic sounds. Local and long distance numbers are included.
Dress
Students must help Freddy & Freida pick out the most appropriate clothes for a cold day, a hot day, a rainy day, and a day at the beach. A photograph demonstrates what type of day it is. Two clothing choices are presented, such as a bathing suit and a ski jacket. The student is to pick which one is most appropriate for that day. When all the correct clothes have been selected, the student sees Freddy & Freida, all dressed and ready for the day.
Find What's Needed
Freddy & Freida need help finding common objects that are necessary for the situation. Color graphics illustrate the situation and the student must pick "what's needed" from among 3 photo choices. Common objects include: keys, fork, mittens, shoes, brush, napkin, hat, belt, pen, tissue, glasses, bandage, knife, cup, toothbrush, money, spoon, coat, towel, watch.
Grocery Shop
Freddy and Freida are grocery shopping for this activity. Rather than wandering aimlessly through the store, students help by identifying what aisle or department items are located in. Photographs are used to show the item along with a written list. There are over 40 items to shop for, divided into four shopping lists. Word recognition is necessary to identify aisle or department names such as Produce, Dairy, Paper Products, Health & Beauty Products, and Frozen Foods.
Identify Money
Freddy and Freida are in a store and the cashier asks them for some money. The student must help them by picking out the correct money item (bills & coins) from among realistic, scanned in choices. One activity requires students to identify money according to its name (i.e. penny, dime, 5 dollar bill), while another activity asks for money by its value (i.e. 5 cents, 20 dollars).
Identify Sounds
Common, everyday sounds are presented in this activity. After hearing the realistic, digitized sound, the student must help Freddy or Freida by identifying what was heard by selecting the corresponding photograph. Sounds included are: dog, cat, bus, alarm clock, knocking at door, doorbell, water faucet, toilet flush, car horn, razor, telephone, footsteps, radio, vacuum, teapot, bathtub.
Order at McDonalds
This activity helps students recognize the printed words of a McDONALDS menu. As Freddy & Freida are ordering, a photograph of their desired item is displayed. The student must then select the corresponding word from the menu. Seventeen menu items are presented, from Big Macs to french fries to milk shakes to apple pies.
Read A Clock
The most important aspect of reading a clock is matching it to activities that are done at certain times. This activity portrays Freddy and Freida in over 25 situations with auditory prompts indicating the corresponding time. For example, "Freida wakes up at 6:30" or "Freddy starts school at 8:30." The computer also shows three clock faces (some analog, some digital). Students are to select the clock face with the correct time.
Read Community Signs
Finding a restroom, crossing the street, entering a building, or avoiding poison is easier for Freddy and Freida if they could find the appropriate symbol signs. This activity presents 4 common community signs at once. With an auditory prompt to find one, the student is to select the corresponding sign. If an incorrect sign is chosen, the computer displays a situation where Freddy or Freida would see that sign. The student selects the sign in the scene and must then pick it out from among the four choices.
Read Functional Words
Sight word recognition of these functional words are taught in this activity. Students are shown 5 word signs and auditorily prompted to find one of them. If an incorrect word sign is selected, the computer displays a situation where Freddy and/or Freida would see that word sign in their community. Students select the word(s) in the scene and are again prompted to find the word(s) from among choices. When the correct word sign is chosen, the student is rewarded with applause. Forty-five word signs are included in this activity.
